Pilot scale studies on: Simultaneous Production and Extraction of ß-carotene from living cells of Dunaliella

The halotolerant green microalga Dunaliella is an attractive organism due to its ability for accumulation of large amount of ß-carotene, a natural colorant and a strong anti-oxidant with several applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. There is a big genetic diversity among endogenous Dunaliella in Iran because of the size of the country and geographic disparity of the salty lakes. In this study growth and ß-carotene accumulation in an endogenous Dunaliella isolated from Uromia Lake was studied. Afterward performance of the novel two-compartment flat panel bioreactor designed in ABRIINW for growth of the isolate was verified. Finally the performance of milking method in extraction of ß-carotene was determined. Result showed that the isolate have high ß-carotene accumulation ability under reactor condition. The novel two-compartment flat panel bioreactor is suitable for growth of this microalga. And it is possible to extract high purity ß-carotene from this microalga with retention of the cell viability.
